The Van Staalduinen family (pronounced van-STALL-du-nine) of Beaufort County, North Carolina, established Petals & Produce to sell fresh produce grown on the family farm directly to friends and neighbors in 2000. Father Bill emigrated to the area from Holland. As a young adult, son Tom lived in Holland, helping his uncle manage an amaryllis greenhouse. Upon his return to North Carolina, Tom managed a local wholesale nursery establishment, opening his own produce stand on the family farm in the Yeatesville community as a side business. A few years later the family opened a second location “in town” in Washington, the county seat. With the introduction of homemade salsas and jams and other specialty products in addition to the home-grown fruits and vegetables, business boomed, and soon Tom had to quit his day job so that he and his wife, Heather, could devote full time attention to the Petals & Produce enterprises, with Dad, Bill, by their sides and wonderful employees and family members to help. I planted the seed . . . but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything but only God, who makes things grow.
Please stop by the farm at Yeatesville for a tour. We are on U.S. 264 between Washington and Belhaven. In Winter 2008, Tom installed a wood-chip boiler that uses wood waste instead of liquid propane to heat our five greenhouses. We are excited about "going green" and saving the business and our customers money while continuing to provide quality, home-grown, fresh flowers and produce year-round! |
